Fur is super hard. But what I did is I went to the local bookstore and rummaged through all their art books to see some techniques on doing fur. What I found is that you want to do all the shading first, like you're not even going to do fur. Then, on top of that, you take your eraser to add in highlights (in the direction of the hair growth). The eraser I used, and that I think is easiest to use for this is an "eraser pen" or "eraser stick" like this one: [link] make sure to cut it flat with a scissor so that it has a nice, sharp edge to it on the sides. You can also use a gum eraser and squish down part of it until it has a razor-fine edge, but I find it doesn't hold well like the eraser pen does. Then you take a pencil and add in some low-lights also in the direction of the fur growth.
Give it a try sometime!! And if you do, let me know how it goes
